The advancement of treatments is good news for the 7.5 million patients in the United States alone. The linkage of psoriasis and the immune system produces a new regimen of treatment of biological agents, proteins, enzymes and other substances of natural origin.

Stelara: It is a biological medicine that is used as a treatment. Stelara is taken by injection, starting with a 45 mg injection under the skin, if you weigh less than 100 kilos. (Otherwise it is a 90 mg dose).

The second dose is in four weeks later, and then once every 12 weeks, according to the National Psoriasis Foundation (NPF).

Inform your doctor to select the correct dosage and frequency, and the injection should be administered by a healthcare professional.

Stelara is for adult patients with moderate to severe psoriasis where the skin is affected in large areas or various parts of the body.

Clinical trials showed that two thirds of patients saw a 75 percent improvement in 12 weeks. Stelara improves psoriasis by decreasing the production of skin cells and reducing inflammation.

Because Stelara acts on the immune system, it affects the patient's ability to fight infection. Like many biological treatments, the safety and power of the drug received extensive testing in clinical trials.

But: BE CAREFUL!: Several side effects observed in the trials were headaches, fatigue and upper respiratory tract infection. In October 2009 it was not approved for patients under 18 years of age and cautioned the elderly to be careful, since the medicine represses the immune system.

Enbrel: Pay attention to the same warnings with Enbrel. Patients also take this with an injection just under the skin.

It is self-administered and more frequent; twice a week at the beginning and weekly after three months. Like Stelara, it blocks messages from the immune system and is effective with psoriatic arthritis and rheumatoid arthritis.

Trials with Enbrel found that nearly half of the patients improved significantly over the three months, and 75 percent noticed improvement.

Phototherapy: Phototherapy and combinations of ultraviolet light with topical medications that are ingested, such as psoralen and ultraviolet light A (PUVA). UVA light is very effective if used with a light sensitive medicine called psoralen, which can be taken topically or orally.

It slows the growth of skin cells and can eliminate psoriasis, but the side effects are nausea, itching and redness, all of which are treatable.

Try topical steroids and tar treatments, as dermatologists have not ruled out these treatments as effective.
