The new treatments offer hope to alleviate the symptoms of psoriasis. Until recently, most psoriasis treatments focused on cleansing the skin or relieving pain and itching symptoms.

The new class of drugs, on the other hand, affects the immune system reaction that causes skin breakouts in psoriasis. The new drugs, known as biological, do not actually cure psoriasis, but have offered considerable relief to many people. Of course, there may be side effects and the risks involved.

There's no cure...

There is no cure for psoriasis, at least it is what you know. But there are a variety of treatments, where many patients with psoriasis found some degree of comfort and control of their symptoms through various treatments.

Biological medications have some side effects and risks, and therefore are recommended only for moderate to severe cases.

Mechanism - Biological Treatment For Psoriasis.

Biological drugs are divided into two categories, TNF-alpha blockers and T-cell blockers.

TNF-alpha blockers: work to prevent a chemical known as tumor necrosis factor. High levels of TNF-alpha have been linked to an overactive immune system.

By blocking this TNF, the biological products prevent the chain reaction that leads to abnormally rapid growth of the skin. TNF-alpha blockers include adalimumab, infliximab and etanercept.

T cell blockers: help trigger an immune response. In patients with psoriasis, T cells can be activated too frequently. T-cell blockers prevent cells from activating, slowing down the immune system. The available T-cell blocker is known as alefacept.

Administration.

Patients can inject adalimub and etanercept by themselves at home, at a time set by their physician. Alefacept requires a weekly visit to the doctor for an injection directly into muscle tissue.

Side effects.

When some patients take the biological medicines for the first time, they experience fever, cough, infections and rashes. Most patients who experience side effects find that their bodies adjust within one to two weeks after starting treatment.

Risks.

Biological treatments "turn off" parts of the immune system. This can leave patients more vulnerable to infection, lymphoma, blood cancer, necrotic skin diseases and other complications.

Patients should be sure to discuss the risk with a physician before taking a biological medication. Pregnant or lactating women are advised not to take organic products. Patients who begin and have persistent cough or fever should inform their doctors.
