We already know that psoriasis of the scalp varies from mild to severe. Redness, flaking, dryness, itching, and other symptoms can be embarrassing and physically unpleasant.

Mild to moderate cases are easier to treat with natural treatments than severe cases, but all people with psoriasis on the scalp can benefit to some extent from natural resources.

If you are rejecting oral and topical medications and shampoos, there are plenty of natural options to treat psoriasis of the scalp. Before you should know that the success of each one varies from person to person.

Phototherapy.

Phototherapy refers to the use of ultraviolet radiation to soothe a skin condition. Natural UVA and UVB from the sun can help treat psoriasis of the scalp. Spend 15 minutes or so per day in direct sunlight. Be sure to use sunscreen on other parts of the body.

There are a number of devices that create artificial UVB radiation for phototherapy. Perhaps it is debatable whether this is a treatment is purely natural, but it operates on the principles of a natural remedy and allows a more controlled application of radiation that is potentially harmful in the long run.

The bathrooms.

Daily baths help remove peeling of the skin and soothe inflammation associated with psoriasis of the scalp. Use only warm water. Certain natural bath additives further soothe the condition and reduce itching.

Add the colloidal oatmeal and let your scalp soak for about 15 minutes. If this does not provide remarkable relief, try Epsom salt or a natural moisturizing bath oil instead.

Natural Supplements and Herbs.

You may be lucky with the supplements or herbs for the treatment of psoriasis of the scalp. Remember that "natural" is not necessarily synonymous with "safe," though, you should always consult your doctor before taking supplements to prevent potentially harmful effects or interactions with other medications you take.

Fish oil, folic acid and shark cartilage are three supplements that are suggested that may have some benefit. As for herbs and plants, cream based on aloe vera or avocado and vitamin B12 can help treat psoriasis. Adding oregano oil is also commonly used in topical preparations for psoriasis.

Lifestyle Approaches.

Psoriasis of the scalp usually has triggers that cause or can aggravate the affections. Avoid personal triggers, which can include cold weather, stress, certain foods or contact with particular materials. Refrain from scratching your irritated places. Also, avoid excessive alcohol consumption and quitting can be beneficial.

Eat a nutritious, well-balanced diet consisting primarily of whole grains, fruits, vegetables, lean proteins, unsaturated fats and some low-fat or fat-free dairy products. Limit processed foods, sodium, sugars and saturated and trans fats.

Use a natural moisturizer on the scalp throughout the day. Apply before bed, too, and wrap the scalp with a plastic wrap overnight. In the morning, remove it and wash loose scales.
